Contribution of perfectionism dimensions towards predicting psychological well-being considering both gender and standard of academic achievement
Abstract
Objective: The
study aimed to identify the dimensions of perfectionism and its contribution
towards predicting psychological well-being, and the differences between them
according to gender and standard of academic achievement. Methods: The study
followed the descriptive approach, and the sample consisted of (422) students
from the College of Basic Education of both genders in the State of Kuwait; the
multidimensional perfectionism scale prepared by Hewitt & Flett (1991) and
translated by Daradkeh (2019), and the Psychological Well-Being Scale prepared
by Diener (2010) and translated by Saleh (2017), were both applied. Results:
The results revealed an increase in internally oriented perfectionism compared
to both other-oriented perfectionism and socially oriented perfectionism. It
was found that internally oriented perfectionism and socially oriented
perfectionism were statistically significant in predicting psychological
well-being. Further, there were differences between males and females in
internally oriented perfectionism and otheroriented perfectionism in favor of
males; also, there were no differences between them in both psychological
well-being, and socially oriented perfectionism. There were also significant
differences in psychological well-being and internally oriented perfectionism
in favor of those with high standards of academic achievement, and the
differences of socially oriented perfectionism were in favor of those with a
low standard of academic achievement, while there were no differences according
to the standard of academic achievement in other-oriented perfectionism.
Conclusion: The results of the study showed differences in the dimensions of
perfectionism in predicting the psychological well-being of the students.
