Mental health during pregnancy and postnatal time – The important connection to mental health of the next generation
Abstract
Perinatal mental health is a critical determinant of maternal well-being and child development outcomes. Mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related conditions are associated with advertise effects on fetal development, parent-infant bonding and also long-term psychological functioning. There is evidence that intergenerational transmission of mental health risk occurs via biological environmental pathways, including dysregulation of the maternal stress response and epigenetic modifications. The necessity of integrating mental health assessment, early interventions, and psychological support into routine obstetric and pediatric care should be shown. Addressing perinatal mental health is essential for maternal outcomes and promoting mental health for the next generations.
