Integrating psychological and psychiatric perspectives for comprehensive mental health treatment: A culturally competent approach for Arab and Muslim Americans in the Washington, DC metro area
Abstract
Mental health treatment for Arab and Muslim Americans in the Washington, DC metro area is shaped by cultural, religious, and familial factors that often create barriers to seeking and sustaining care. Stigma surrounding mental illness, particularly addiction, leads to underutilization of psychological and psychiatric services. This presentation explores an integrated model in which a clinical psychologist and psychiatrist collaborate to provide comprehensive, culturally competent care tailored to the unique needs of this population. By combining psychodynamic psychotherapy with eclectic treatment approaches and pharmacological interventions, this multidisciplinary approach addresses a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders. A key focus of the discussion will be on addiction, a highly stigmatized issue within Arab and Muslim communities, and the role of family, honor, and religious beliefs in shaping treatment-seeking behaviors. The presentation will highlight strategies for overcoming cultural stigma, protecting patient rights, and engaging families in a manner that respects collectivist values while prioritizing individual well-being. The integration of psychodynamic psychotherapy with other evidence-based and culturally responsive approaches allows for deeper exploration of unconscious conflicts, intergenerational trauma, and the impact of acculturation stress on mental health. Additionally, the session will explore the role of emerging technologies, such as telehealth and digital mental health tools, in increasing access to care while maintaining confidentiality and cultural sensitivity. By presenting clinical case examples and best practices, this talk aims to equip mental health professionals with strategies to deliver more effective and inclusive care to Arab and Muslim American patients.
