The effects of social media on procrastination and self-concept of young adults
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of social media use on procrastination behavior and
self-concept among young adults. A sample of 100 individuals aged 18–24 was assessed using
the Social Media Addiction Scale–Student Form (SMAS-SF), General Procrastination Scale
(GPS), and Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS). The research adopted a quantitative,
correlational design.
Findings revealed a significant positive correlation between social media addiction and
self-concept (r = .351, p < .01), suggesting that greater social media engagement may enhance
self-perception due to curated online identities. Additionally, a positive relationship between
social media use and procrastination (r = .269, p < .01) was observed, indicating that high
engagement might lead to academic and personal task delays.
These results highlight the dual impact of social media on psychological functioning—both
enhancing self-concept and increasing procrastination tendencies. Implications for educational
and psychological interventions promoting mindful digital habits are discussed.
