Burnout in university students: A narrative review
Abstract
Context:
The increasing prevalence of burnout among university students in
demanding academic environments highlights the need for an in-depth
understanding of this phenomenon, aiming to guide more effective
prevention, detection and intervention strategies.
Objective:
This narrative
review aimed to: a) describe the manifestations of burnout syndrome in
university students; b) identify the risk factors associated with its
development; and c) determine the relevant protective factors.
Methods:
A
narrative review was carried out that encompassed 20 scientific articles,
encompassing a total of 11,596 university students, both national and
international.
Results:
It was found that students with high levels of low selfesteem, anxiety, stress and depression were more predisposed to developing
burnout syndrome. On the other hand, the main protective factors identified
included: high self-esteem, use of effective coping strategies, high academic
engagement, positive teaching leadership and high socioeconomic
status.
Conclusions:
Integration and adaptation to higher education are
complex processes, influenced by different dynamics faced by students. The
importance of a deep understanding of students' needs is highlighted,
allowing for early and appropriate intervention that encompasses the
effective prevention, identification and treatment of burnout.
