A clinical audit on knowledge and practice on pre and post electro convulsive therapy (ECT) among nursing officers, National Hospital, Kandy
Abstract
Background
Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT), has been widely used as an effective
treatment for various mental health conditions across globally. In Sri Lanka,
most of the inpatient units provide ECT treatment. Even though it is a day
procedure, several factors needed to be considered including indication,
consent, medications and possible adverse effects. Therefore, pre and post ECT
monitoring is of the utmost importance.
Aims
To assess the knowledge and practice of pre and post ECT monitoring among
nursing officers in National Hospital, Kandy.
Methods;
This audit was conducted among nurses working at acute psychiatry inpatient
unit, National Hospital, Kandy. 13 nurses have been voluntarily participated
for the study and data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire.
Results
15% of the participants had good knowledge on medications which needed to be
withheld in the previous night and 38% of them had good knowledge on pre ECT
patient preparation. However, 84% of participants had good knowledge about
medications that must be given on the morning. 92% of participants had adequate
knowledge regarding usage of medication in managing acute disturbance in
patients undergoing ECT. 53% of participants had adequate knowledge and
practice on post ECT monitoring during recovery period and 76% of them had good
knowledge on post ECT complications.
Conclusion
Even though, the knowledge about drugs which were needed to be withheld is low (15%)
among participants, majority (84%) had good knowledge on pre ECT medications.
Even though the knowledge on the pre ECT monitoring is low (38), knowledge on
post ECT monitoring is satisfying (53%). The
results of this study implies that the nursing officers working in an acute
inpatient unit, needs further improvement in knowledge and practice on
preparation, medications and monitoring. Further research is recommended with a
larger cohort.
