The relationship between perceived parenting styles and emotion regulation among young adults
Abstract
This study examines the association between perceived parenting styles and emotion
regulation among Indian young adults. A sample of 150 participants aged 18–25 completed
the Perceived Parenting Style Scale and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Findings
indicate that authoritative parenting is positively associated with cognitive reappraisal, an
adaptive emotion regulation strategy. In contrast, authoritarian and permissive parenting
styles show positive correlations with emotional suppression. No significant gender or age
differences were observed, though marital status influenced parenting style perception. The
study provides culturally relevant insights into emotional development and informs parentfocused interventions aimed at improving emotional well-being.
